Rio 2016: Deepika Kumari advances into pre-quarters of women's individual archery

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 11: India's top athlete and one of the best hopes for Olympic medal, archer Deepika Kumari, advanced into pre-quarterfinal stage of the women's individual archery competition of the ongoing Rio Olympics here.

The Jharkhand girl defeated Italy's Guendalina Sartori 6-2 to storm into the pre-quarters at the Olympic Shooting Centre.

The 22-year-old ace Indian archer came back strongly after losing the first set by 24-27 against the Italian and won the last three sets 29-26, 28-26, 28-27 to storm into the next round.

Earlier, the Jharkhand girl defeated Kristine Esebua of Georgia in the 1/32 eliminators to enter into 1/16 eliminators.

Deepika, placed 12th in the world rankings, displayed excellent form to defeat the higher ranked Esebua 6-4.

Earlier in the day, Deepika's compatriot Bombayla Devi Laishram also qualified into the pre-quarters stage.

Bombayla advanced into the 1/8 Eliminations round, beating Taipei's Shih-Chia Lin 108-101 at the Rio Olympics here on Wednesday. Bombayla won 108-101 via 27-24, 27-24, 26-27, 28-26 at the Sambodromo. Earlier, she defeated Austria's Laurence Baldauff 105-98 in the 1/32 eliminations in the women's individual round match.
