Today (August 13), the American swimmer was finally beaten by Singapore's 21-year-old Joseph Schooling in the 100m butterfly category.

After the race, the legendary swimmer confirmed the news that he will be retiring from the sport. He said: "I'm not going four more years and I'm standing by that.

"I've been able to do everything I've ever put my mind to in the sport. I'm happy with how things finished."

Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps' compatriot although believes that he will not retire so soon and will be back in Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Lochte said: "I guarantee he will be there. I think so. I really think so. So Michael, I'll see you in Tokyo."

Phelps has the chance to win his 23rd gold medal to his tally when he takes art in the 4x100m medley relay.
