Rohit Yadav’s Remarkable Rise Continues: 87.05m Throw Makes Him World’s No. 2 This Season, Seals Asian Games Berth

Bhubaneswar, June 28: The last two-and-a-half years have been a story of pain, patience and perseverance for Rohit Yadav.

From missing a World Championships due to injury to struggling through an entire season without a single 80-metre throw, the Indian javelin thrower has endured enough setbacks to derail many careers. Instead, Rohit chose to fight back.

Rohit Yadav s Remarkable Rise Continues 87 05m Throw Makes Him World s No 2 This Season Seals Asian Games Berth

And on Sunday at the 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, he delivered the greatest performance of his career.

The Uttar Pradesh athlete unleashed a sensational 87.05m throw, setting a massive new personal best, securing qualification for the 2026 Asian Games, becoming India's third-best javelin thrower of all time, and recording the second-best throw in the world this season.

The throw was comfortably beyond the Asian Games qualification standard of 77.87m and established Rohit as one of India's leading medal contenders heading into the continental showpiece.

A Journey Interrupted By Injury

Rohit's rise had gathered momentum in 2023 when he won gold at the National Inter-State Championships. However, just when bigger opportunities beckoned, injury struck.

The setback forced him to miss the 2023 World Athletics Championships, halting his progress at a crucial stage of his career. The following season turned into a frustrating battle for form and fitness.

In 2024, Rohit failed to produce a single throw beyond 80 metres - a rare occurrence for an athlete of his calibre.

For many, it would have been a confidence-shattering phase. For Rohit, it became fuel.

The Comeback Begins

Signs of recovery emerged in 2025. At the National Games, he finally breached the 80-metre mark again, throwing 80.47m, his first such effort in nearly 18 months.

The confidence slowly returned. A few months later, he recorded 80.35m at the World Athletics Bronze Tour in Bhubaneswar before producing a new personal best of 83.65m at the Inter-State Championships.

That performance earned him qualification for his second World Athletics Championships in Tokyo and signalled that Rohit was once again moving in the right direction.

2026: A New Rohit Yadav Emerges

The current season has witnessed a transformed athlete.

Rohit began 2026 by winning the Indian Athletics Series-3 in New Delhi with a throw of 82.17m, immediately establishing himself as India's leading javelin thrower of the year.

He followed that performance with 80.40m at the Federation Cup.

Then came another personal best at the Indian Athletics Series-9 in Ludhiana, where he threw 83.76m.

Each competition brought incremental improvements.

Each throw hinted that something special was brewing.

Few, however, could have predicted what unfolded at Kalinga Stadium.

The Throw Of His Life

With the crowd watching intently, Rohit launched the spear into the Bhubaneswar sky.

The javelin landed at 87.05m. The stadium erupted.

It was not just a personal best. It was one of the finest throws ever produced by an Indian athlete.

The mark now stands as:

  • 87.05m - New Personal Best
  • Qualified for the 2026 Asian Games (Qualification Mark: 77.87m)
  • India's Third-Best Javelin Throw Ever
  • Second-Best Throw in the World This Season
  • One of the Best Performances in Indian Athletics This Year

Only Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra has thrown farther among Indians in recent years.

Earlier this season, Chopra opened his campaign with 85.69m at the Doha Diamond League, securing qualification for both the 2026 Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.

Rohit has now gone even farther.

Strengthening India's Javelin Depth

For years, the Indian javelin has been synonymous with Neeraj Chopra.

But Rohit's emergence offers fresh evidence that India is developing genuine depth in the discipline. With Neeraj, Rohit and several other athletes consistently throwing beyond 80 metres, India now possesses one of the strongest javelin groups in Asia.

More importantly, Rohit's performance has elevated him into the conversation among the world's elite throwers this season.

Redemption Complete

The significance of the 87.05m throw extends beyond rankings and qualification standards.

It represents the culmination of years spent battling injuries, self-doubt and missed opportunities. From missing the 2023 World Championships to producing the world's second-best throw of the season, Rohit's journey is a testament to resilience.

His story is proof that setbacks do not define careers. How athletes respond to them does.

And on a memorable evening in Bhubaneswar, Rohit Yadav delivered the perfect response.
