Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage Beats Neeraj Chopra, Anderson Peters to Clinch Doha Diamond League Crown

Doha, June 19: Sri Lanka's rising javelin star Rumesh Pathirage produced the performance of his career to win the men's javelin throw title at the Doha Diamond League 2026, defeating a world-class field that included Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, former world champion Anderson Peters, and American star Curtis Thompson.

Pathirage unleashed a stunning 88.68m effort in the fourth round to claim victory and set a new national record, becoming the first Sri Lankan athlete to win a Diamond League javelin title. Also Read: Pathirage Reveals Secret Behind Historic 92.62m Throw | Exclusive

Earlier this month, Pathirage threw 92.62m at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea in Rome, becoming one of only a handful of Asian athletes to cross the coveted 90-metre mark. Before that, he recorded 85.97m in Rabat and 89.28m at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi.

His 2026 campaign had already included victories at the Champions Track and Field Meet in Diyagama (89.37m), Nairobi (89.28m), Rome (92.62m) and Ostrava (86.57m), underlining his consistency at the highest level.

In Doha, however, Pathirage faced arguably his toughest challenge of the season.

The field featured India's Neeraj Chopra, a former Olympic and World Champion making his comeback after a nine-month absence; Grenada's Anderson Peters, a two-time world champion; American Curtis Thompson, one of the most consistent performers on the Diamond League circuit; Trinidad and Tobago's Olympic medallist and reigning world champion Keshorn Walcott; and promising Ukrainian thrower Artur Felfner.

Pathirage opened with 82.62m before improving to 84.63m in the second round. After a modest third-round effort of 80.53m, the Sri Lankan delivered the decisive throw of the competition - 88.68m - in the fourth round.

Neither Peters nor Thompson could respond despite late improvements, while Chopra's best effort of 85.69m left him fourth.
