Nathan Outteridge Biography

Outteridge's passion for sailing was ignited by watching the sport during his childhood. At 14, he attended the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, where he was captivated by the 49er class. This experience solidified his desire to pursue a career in sailing.

Coaching and Influences

His national coach, Darren Bundock from Australia, has played a crucial role in his development. Outteridge credits his father, Tony, as the most influential person in his career. Tony's support was instrumental in Nathan's recovery from a severe back injury in 2005.

Injuries and Recovery

In January 2005, Outteridge broke his back in a car accident. He spent a month in hospital and three months in a back brace. Despite fears of never walking again, he made a successful recovery and returned to sailing within eight months.

Awards and Honours

Outteridge has received numerous accolades throughout his career. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2014 and featured on an Australian stamp with teammate Iain Jensen after their gold medal win at the 2012 London Olympics.

He also received the Male Sailor of the Year Award at the Australian Sailing Awards in 2012 and Team of the Year Award at the Australian Institute of Sport Awards in 2009. He was named Youth Sailor of the Year multiple times between 2002 and 2005.

Outteridge has competed with several partners over the years. He won gold with childhood friend Iain Jensen at the 2004 Youth World Championships and later teamed up with him again for the 2012 London Olympics and 2016 Rio Olympics.
