For decades, athletic success has been primarily attributed to physical prowess - strength, speed, and endurance. But in this ever-evolving landscape of sports performance, cutting-edge brain training techniques are revolutionising how athletes prepare for competition.
At the forefront of this innovation is Gaurav Sharma from Physiokarma, whose program integrates 20 advanced brain training technologies to boost mental resilience and cognitive prowess. Physiokarma's 'Brain-Training Program' to support national players, is powered by HCL, the global tech conglomerate.

By focusing on sensory input and neuroplasticity, the unique brain-training approach goes beyond traditional motor ability training, aiming to enhance the brain's functionality for superior athletic performance.
This comprehensive method is tailored to the unique demands of competitive sports, ensuring athletes can concentrate, make quick decisions, and adapt dynamically during high-pressure situations. Through a blend of neuroscience and sports psychology, Physiokarma is paving the way for a new era in athletic excellence.
Here are the excerpts from a conversation with Gaurav Sharma, Rajat Chandolia (AVP and Head of Brand at HCL) and Aryaveer Dewan (Indian squash player):
Q. Can you explain the innovative brain training techniques used in this program to boost mental resilience and cognitive performance in athletes?
Gaurav Sharma: Our program at Physiokarma integrates 20 advanced brain training technologies that enhance sensory inputs, ultimately improving motor responses. We focus on areas like:
This holistic approach boosts both cognitive and sensory abilities, empowering athletes to perform at their peak in high-pressure situations.
Q. How are these techniques tailored specifically for sports performance enhancement?
Gaurav Sharma: Our techniques are customized based on the specific demands of each sport. We conduct both on-field and off-field sessions, analyzing data collected during performance.
This ensures athletes can enhance their focus, anticipate opponents' moves, and adapt dynamically during gameplay.
Q. What is the scientific basis behind the brain training methods used in this program?
Gaurav Sharma: The foundation of our methods lies in neuroplasticity-the brain's ability to reorganize and form new neural connections. This allows athletes to unlearn old habits and acquire new skills efficiently.
Brain training has a proven track record. Elite athletes like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Steph Curry have used similar technologies to gain a mental edge. What sets Physiokarma apart is our structured curriculum that integrates multiple technologies for comprehensive brain development.
As Rahul Sharma noted, mental toughness often determines success in clutch moments, which can be the difference between finishing fourth and standing on the podium.
Q. How do athletes typically respond to brain training exercises compared to traditional physical training?
Gaurav Sharma: Athletes respond positively to brain training because it complements physical training by targeting cognitive skills like concentration, decision-making, and emotional regulation.
Q. Why did HCL partner with Physiokarma for this initiative?
Rajat Chandolia, AVP and Head of Brand at HCL: We want India to become a sporting powerhouse. There's no shortage of talent, but mental strength is equally important. Gaurav and Physiokarma's approach can elevate Indian athletes' performance to the next level. Top athletes worldwide already use brain training techniques, and it's time we did too.
Q: What has been the impact of Physiokarma on your personal development as an athlete? Has it transformed your performance on the court?
Indian squash player Aryaveer Dewan: Yes, I have witnessed a sea change in my performance. The brain training process has helped in many aspects of my game. I have seen a significant improvement in regaining focus after losing a few undesirable points or games. My reaction time has drastically improved and I am able to reach the ball faster, thanks to the activities of the VR headset. Previously, I used to struggle with playing long matches consistently but the focussing exercises have helped me develop the ability to focus for long periods without getting distracted. The performance profiling made me aware of the areas which are my strengths and weaknesses and where I should spend more time to improve. One thing that I loved about the brain training was the visualisation of audio and headsets. Before crucial matches, it helps my mind get off the nerves and (I am) more focussed on the game because that is what eventually matters.
By focusing on mental resilience and cognitive development, Physiokarma and HCL aim to unlock the full potential of Indian athletes, helping them achieve excellence on the global stage.
Brain training is no longer a luxury-it's a necessity for athletes aiming to compete at the highest level. With Physiokarma's innovative techniques, athletes are not only sharpening their physical skills but also unlocking their mental potential, paving the way for a new era of sports excellence.
