Khelo India Winter Games: Urmila Pable’s 'Inspiring Ride' From Skateboard to Snowboard- Exclusive

Khelo India Winter Games: Personal hardships often shape individuals into remarkable athletes, instilling in them a sense of responsibility and maturity at an early age.

Urmila Pable, a 23-year-old from Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra), is a testament to this.

Urmila Pable

Having lost her father when she was in Grade 5, Urmila and her brother were raised by a single mother who, though not well-educated, always believed in her daughter's dreams.

Over the years, Urmila has carved a niche for herself in skateboarding, representing India on international platforms. Now, she has made an inspiring debut in snowboarding, securing a bronze medal at the Khelo India Winter Games 2025 in Gulmarg-despite having started training for the sport only on February 17 this year.

From Skateboarding to Snowboarding: A Natural Transition

Urmila's foray into snowboarding may seem unexpected, but her experience as a professional skateboarder helped her pick up the sport quickly.

"I started snowboarding this season on February 17 and haven't taken a single break. Learning snowboarding was easier for me because I am a professional skateboarder and part of Team India in skateboarding. I have won many national medals in skateboarding, so the transition felt natural."

In her very first Khelo India Winter Games appearance, Urmila managed to step onto the podium. Her rapid progress would not have been possible without the guidance of her coach, Raees Khan, whom she credits for her achievement.

"My coach has the biggest hand behind this success. Because of him, I was able to learn so fast. I feel really proud of myself and excited to take this sport ahead in the future. My aim is to win gold next season."

Achievements in Skateboarding

While snowboarding is a new passion for her, skateboarding remains her first love. Urmila has been competing at the highest level, winning a silver medal in the 36th National Games and representing India at the World Skateboarding Championships in Sharjah, UAE, which served as an Olympic qualifier.

"I ranked first in India in skateboarding this season. Competing at the world championships in 2023 was a great experience, and I hope to continue excelling in both sports."

Overcoming Challenges: A Journey of Self-Reliance

Losing her father at a young age, Urmila had to take on responsibilities early. She has been supporting herself financially since the age of 17, funding both her education and her sporting career.

"I had to be the man of myself. I traveled alone, learned to be independent, and took care of myself. Sports have given me mental and physical strength. No matter how many times I fall, I always get back up."

Despite the struggles, she never let financial or societal challenges hinder her dreams. Her mother, despite being unable to provide financial support, has been her emotional pillar.

"My mother always believed in me. She couldn't guide me much since she isn't well-educated, but we had strong faith in the path I chose. Everything I did, I figured out on my own, with support from the people I met through sports."

Social Media and Future Plans

Apart from being a successful athlete, Urmila has also built a significant following as a social media influencer, with over 110K followers on Instagram. This has helped her secure sponsorships from skateboarding companies, providing financial support for her training.

"I have sponsors for skateboarding, and social media also helps me financially. For snowboarding, I am planning to train abroad next season so I can compete at both international and national tournaments. I want to pursue both sports together."

Looking Ahead: Aiming for Greater Heights

Urmila Pable's journey-from skateboarding to snowboarding, from personal struggles to national success-is a story of resilience, passion, and determination. With her sights set on excelling in both sports, she dreams of representing India on the global stage, possibly at the Olympics.

"Sports have taught me to never give up. No matter what comes my way, I will keep pushing forward."

With her unwavering spirit, Urmila is on the path to achieving greatness, proving that no obstacle is too big when dreams are backed by perseverance.
