Oh Jin Hyek Biography

Oh's international debut came in 1999, representing the Republic of Korea. His father has been the most influential person in his career. Oh's dedication to archery is evident in his philosophy: "Archery is like 'air' for me."

Challenges and Injuries

In 2011, Oh tore the rotator cuff in his right shoulder. This injury continued to trouble him for years. Despite this, he persevered and continued to compete at the highest levels. In 2017, doctors advised him to retire due to his shoulder issues. However, he decided to continue with the aim of competing at the 2020 Olympic Games.

Major Achievements

Oh made history at the 2012 London Olympics by becoming the first male archer from Korea to win an individual gold medal. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he became the oldest athlete from Korea to win a medal when he secured gold as part of the men's recurve team.

Awards and Honours

Oh has received several awards throughout his career. In 2021, he received a Grand Award at the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Sports Awards. He was named Best Archer of the Year by the Korean Archery Association in 2013 and received their Excellence Award in 2012. Additionally, he was honoured with the Jeonbuk Sports Award and the East Asia Sports Archery Award in 2010.

Club and Coaching

Oh is affiliated with Hyundai Steel in Korea. His coaches include Han Seung-Hoon at the club level and Kim Seong-Hoon at the national level. He shoots right-handed and has been a significant figure in Korean archery.

Personal Life

Oh is married to Eom Min-Kyoung and has one son and one daughter as of 2018. He pursued higher education in Social Work Studies at Hanil University in Korea. He speaks Korean fluently.

Looking ahead, Oh aims to compete at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. His commitment to archery remains strong despite past challenges.
