Oh Sanguk Biography

Oh's initial foray into fencing was met with resistance from his parents. However, coach Park Jong-Han's recognition of his potential changed their minds. By 2015, Oh made his international debut at the World Cup in Padua, Italy, representing the Republic of Korea.

Oh has been associated with Daejeon Metropolitan City Hall and is coached by Won Woo-Young at the national level. Known for his height, he earned the nickname "Monster." His right-handed technique has brought him numerous accolades over the years.

Oh's achievements include being named Athlete of the Year at various awards ceremonies. In February 2023, he received the Athlete of the Year Award at the 69th Korean Sport and Olympic Committee Sports Awards. He also won the Excellent Male Fencer Award in 2021 and the Best Athlete Award in 2020.

Despite his successes, Oh has faced several injuries. In 2024, he was affected by an ankle injury at the Grand Prix event in Seoul. He underwent surgery on his right ankle in November 2022 after rupturing a ligament during a national training camp. He returned to competition at the 2023 World Cup event in Budapest.

In March 2021, Oh tested positive for COVID-19 after winning gold in individual sabre at the World Cup event in Budapest. He resumed training one month later. Additionally, he had surgery on his right foot's little toe in August 2016.

Oh cites his middle school coach Park Jong-Han as the most influential person in his career. He looks up to Korean fencers Kim Jung-Hwan and Gu Bon-Gil as his idols. His sporting philosophy is simple: "If somebody says fencing, I want to be the person that immediately comes to mind."

Oh resides in Daejeon and speaks Korean. He pursued higher education in Physical Education at Daejeon University. Outside of fencing, he enjoys gaming.

Oh's older brother, Oh Sang-Min, also represented the Republic of Korea in fencing at the 2014 World Junior Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
