Verniaiev's dedication to the sport led him to move from Donetsk to Kyiv in 2009 to train under coach Gennady Sartynsky. This decision was driven by his desire to be trained by Sartynsky, whom he trusted deeply. This trust has been the foundation of their relationship since their first meeting.

In 2014, Verniaiev was named Sportsperson of the Year in Ukraine. He also received the title of Honoured Master of Sport in Ukraine. His achievements at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro earned him the Order for Merits [third grade] in Ukraine.

Injuries and Surgeries

Throughout his career, Verniaiev has faced several injuries. In 2014, he underwent ankle surgery and was unable to train for five weeks. In 2016, he tore a ligament in his leg. Late 2017 saw him suffer a shoulder injury, which required surgery in early 2018. He also underwent surgery on a leg injury in early 2018.

In January 2019, Verniaiev had surgery on both ankles in Tel Aviv, Israel. This was the third time he needed an operation on his left ankle during his career. Despite these setbacks, Verniaiev continued to excel in his sport.

Milestones and Awards

Verniaiev made history by becoming the first male artistic gymnast representing Ukraine to win a medal in the individual all-around at the World Championships. He claimed bronze at the 2019 edition in Stuttgart, Germany. His performance at the 2019 European Games in Minsk, Belarus, earned him the Order for Merits [second grade] in Ukraine.

Suspension and Return

In August 2020, Verniaiev tested positive for meldonium during an out-of-competition test and received a four-year suspension starting November 2020. He claimed that the substance entered his system through contaminated food products and appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). In March 2023, CAS reduced his ban from four years to two years, making him eligible to compete immediately.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, Verniaiev aims to compete at the 2023 World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium. His journey continues as he strives for further success in artistic gymnastics.

Outside of gymnastics, Verniaiev enjoys spending time with friends. He is fluent in English, Russian, and Ukrainian. Despite numerous challenges throughout his career, Verniaiev remains dedicated to his sport and continues to inspire many with his resilience and determination.
