Mellouli's mother motivated him to swim after witnessing a child drown one summer. Despite coming from a modest family with no sporting tradition, she wanted her children to learn swimming. Mellouli joined the Trojan Swim Club in Los Angeles and earned nicknames like "Ous," "The Tunisian Torpedo," and "The Shark of the Mediterranean."

Mellouli's notable achievements include winning gold in the 1500m freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and gold in the 10km open water swimming at the 2012 London Olympics. He idolises US boxer Muhammad Ali and has faced several injuries throughout his career, including shoulder injuries and a slipped disc.
