Poly turned professional in March 1994. She quickly made a name for herself with her impressive skills on the court. By June 2004, she became the second South American woman to be ranked in the world top 10 in singles, following Argentina's Gabriela Sabatini.

In 2002, 2003, and 2004, Poly was named in the WTA Doubles Team of the Year with Virginia Ruano Pascual. Their partnership reached nine consecutive Grand Slam finals, a record unmatched since Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver's streak between 1983 Wimbledon and the 1985 Australian Open.

Memorable Moments

One of Poly's most memorable achievements was winning a medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. She also won her third career title at Vienna in 2003, becoming the 10th woman in the Open era to win a tour singles title while ranked No.1 in doubles.

Challenges and Retirement

Poly faced significant challenges during her career. She missed the second half of the 2005 season due to hip surgery. Persistent injuries troubled her in 2006 and 2007, leading to her retirement at the end of 2007 after the US Open.
