Pavlos Kontides Biography

Kontides’ father played a pivotal role in introducing him to sailing. He encouraged Pavlos to try the sport, which eventually became his career. Kontides is currently associated with the Limassol Nautical Club in Cyprus. He looks up to Brazilian sailor Robert Scheidt as his idol.

Challenges and Injuries

Kontides faced several challenges throughout his career. In 2011, he fractured his arm after slipping in the shower post-training but continued gym sessions twice daily with a cast on. In 2010, he was diagnosed with a herniated disc and advised to quit sailing. However, he sought multiple opinions until finding a doctor who allowed him to continue, focusing on core-strengthening exercises for rehabilitation.

Philosophy and Achievements

Kontides believes that "The impossible is something you only have in mind. Your mind is the biggest barrier, but once you understand it, it can become your biggest weapon and your biggest ally." This philosophy has driven him to achieve remarkable milestones in his career.

In 2018, Kontides was named World Sailor of the Year at the World Sailing Awards. The same year, he was honoured as Cypriot Athlete of the Year by the Cyprus Sports Writers Union for the sixth time in seven years. He also had the honour of being Cyprus' flag bearer at the 2016 Olympic Games opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro.

Historic Milestones

Kontides made history by becoming the first Cypriot athlete to win an Olympic medal when he secured silver in the Laser class at the 2012 London Olympics. Additionally, he became the first sailor to win gold twice in the Laser class at the world youth championships—first in 2007 in Kingston, Canada, and then in 2008 in Aarhus, Denmark.
