Pilar Peña Biography

Pilar has been recognised for her contributions to water polo. She was part of the Spanish national team that received an award from the Spanish Sports Press Association (AEPD) for their victory at the 2020 European Championships in Budapest. Pilar was one of four players who collected the award on behalf of the team at the AEPD Gala in Teruel, Spain, in September 2021.

In 2018, Pilar and her teammates received the Extraordinary Medal for Sports Merit from the Spanish Swimming Federation for winning a bronze medal at the European Championships in Barcelona. In 2014, she was honoured with the Silver Medal of the Royal Order of Sports Merit by the Spanish government.

In 2013, Pilar received the Gold Insignia from the city of Alcorcon alongside her national team coach Miguel Angel Oca. Additionally, a swimming pool in Navalcan and a sports hall in Alcorcon have been named in her honour.

Personal Life and Education

Pilar is multilingual, fluent in both English and Spanish. She enjoys cooking and practising yoga during her free time. Her educational background is impressive; she holds bachelor's degrees in child education, psychology, and pedagogy. Pilar also trained as a yoga instructor in India.

Reflecting on her time in India, Pilar said, "You have to keep your mind busy. Sometimes you get so obsessed with sports but you need to keep on studying." She described her experience as intense but ultimately rewarding.
