Crouser's family never pressured him into shot put, but he was surrounded by excellent coaches. He also competed in sprints and long jump during elementary school. His personal coach since 2020 has been Mario Sategna, based in the USA.

Throughout his career, Crouser faced several injuries. A pectoral tear in March 2019 sidelined him for two weeks. He missed the 2018 indoor season due to a hand injury. In 2015, he dislocated his little finger five weeks before the NCAA Championships but recovered in time to compete.

While at the University of Texas at Austin, Crouser earned significant accolades. He was named the 2014 Men's National Field Event Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA and the 2012 Big 12 Conference Indoor Freshman of the Year.

Crouser's family has a rich history in athletics. His uncle Brian and cousin Samuel competed in javelin at the Olympics. His father Mitch was a discus alternate for the US team at the 1984 Games. Another cousin, Haley, placed 11th in javelin at the 2012 World Junior Championships.
