Zapata has faced several injuries throughout his career. In September 2017, he tore his right Achilles tendon while warming up for the final of the floor exercise at the World Cup event in Paris. This injury ruled him out for nine months. In August 2020, he underwent ankle surgery to remove bone fragments that caused him pain when vaulting. He returned to training after one month.

In 2022, an Achilles tendon injury prevented him from competing at the Spanish Championships. Despite these setbacks, Zapata remains determined and continues to train with the goal of competing at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Zapata resides in Alcorcón, Spain, with his partner Susana and their two children, Olympia and Kayro. He speaks Spanish and is known by the nickname "Ray."
