Ri Se Gwang Biography

Throughout his career, Ri faced several injuries. In 2013, he sustained a knee injury at the World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium. The following year, he injured his left ankle during the Asian Games in Incheon, Republic of Korea. Despite these setbacks, Ri continued to compete at the highest level.

Awards and Honours

Ri's achievements have been recognised with multiple awards. In 2015 and 2018, he was named one of the Top 10 Athletes of the Year in DPR Korea. He also received prestigious titles such as the Kim Jong-Il Award, the Title of the People's Athlete, and the Title of Effort Hero.

Retirement and Legacy

Ri announced his retirement from gymnastics in February 2020. His contributions to the sport were further immortalised when the 'Ri Se Gwang' element was added to the Code of Points for vault by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). This element involves a backward full-twisting double tucked Tsukahara.
