Fitzsimmons made his international debut in 2015, representing Australia. He is a member of the Avoca Kayak Club and the New South Wales Institute of Sport. Known by nicknames "Rizz" and "Fitzy," he has been influenced by Australian sprint paddler Lachlan Tame and Ironman triathlete Hugh Dougherty.

Awards and Achievements

In 2019, Fitzsimmons received the Team of the Year award at the Paddle Australia Awards. This honour recognised his gold medal win with teammates Jackson Collins, Thomas Green, and Jean van der Westhuyzen at the U23 World Championships in Pitesti, Romania. He also won the same award in 2017 with Ken Wallace, Murray Stewart, and Jordan Wood for their gold medal at the World Championships in Racice, Czech Republic.

Surf Lifesaving Experience

Fitzsimmons has also competed in surf lifesaving. He won a silver medal in the open mixed ski relay at the 2019 International Surf Rescue Challenge in Durban, South Africa. He credits his surf lifesaving experience for benefitting his canoe sprint career. He believes that without the support of the Avoca Surf Lifesaving Club, he wouldn't have made it to the 2016 Olympics.

Fitzsimmons resides in Avoca Beach with his partner Georgia. He speaks English and continues to train rigorously for upcoming competitions. His sporting philosophy is simple: "There are no shortcuts to a place worth going."
