Kawai's family has been a major influence on her career. Her father, Takahito, was a university-level wrestler and a two-time Greco-Roman champion at the All Japan student championships. Her mother, Hatsue, represented Japan at the 1989 World Championships in Switzerland, finishing seventh.

Risako Kawai pursued higher education in Health Studies at Shigakkan University in Obu. She is fluent in Japanese and balances her athletic career with an office job.
