Robbie Grabarz Biography

Grabarz chose high jump because it was fun for him as a child. "I chose to continue with high jump for the perfectly simple reason to a 10-year-old boy: that it was great fun to run as fast as you possibly could, jump over a bar and land on a foam bed – I was hooked," he said.

Club and Coaching

He represents Newham and Essex Beagles in England. His national coach, Fayyaz Ahmed, has been a significant influence on his career. Grabarz credits Ahmed as the most influential person in his athletic journey.

Memorable Achievements

One of Grabarz's most memorable achievements is winning a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. This accomplishment stands out in his career and highlights his dedication and skill in high jump.

Challenges and Comeback

In 2014, Grabarz underwent surgery to fix a knee injury that had troubled him since 2012. The operation took three hours instead of the planned one hour due to the extent of the damage. As a result, he missed the 2014 season, including the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

He made his comeback at the 2015 Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, finishing 14th with a jump of 2.16m.

Other Sports Interests

Before focusing on high jump, Grabarz played hockey at county level for Cambridgeshire. This background in another sport showcases his versatile athletic abilities.

Personal Life

Grabarz resides in Birmingham and is fluent in English and Mandarin. He has a daughter and enjoys restoring classic cars as a hobby. This passion for cars almost led him to quit athletics in 2011 when he lost his UK Athletics funding after ranking outside the top 40.
