In 2016, Cannone left his studies at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT, USA, to return to France. He joined the VGA Escrime Saint-Maur club to pursue qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games. His efforts paid off when he won gold in individual epee at the Tokyo Olympics.

This victory made him the youngest French fencer to win an individual epee Olympic gold medal at age 24 years and 104 days. His world ranking was 47 at the time of the Games. This achievement was France's first Olympic individual gold medal in fencing since Brice Guyart's win in 2004.
