Sarah Menezes Biography

Menezes faced challenges early on, including a lack of training partners in Teresina. She moved to Rio de Janeiro, where she found more suitable training conditions. "In my city, I was not having people to train with me in the specific side, which is fighting," she said. "But in Rio, I found many people with the same level to train and that has helped me a lot."

Coaching and Support

Her coaches include Expedito Falcao at the club level and Rosicleia Campos and Mario Tsutsui at the national level. Menezes also had to overcome initial resistance from her parents, who did not see judo as a suitable sport or career for their daughter. However, their views changed when her coach informed them of her potential to join the Brazilian national team.

Achievements and Recognition

Menezes' most memorable achievement came when she won a gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. "It was a feeling of relief, of mission accomplished, of reaching the top in my sport," she said. This victory made her the first Brazilian female to become an Olympic champion in judo.

In 2009, she was named Brazil's Female Sports Personality of the Year. Her partner, Loic Pietri, also excels in judo, representing France and winning the -81kg gold medal at the 2013 World Championship in Rio de Janeiro.

Personal Life and Education

Menezes resides in Rio de Janeiro and serves in the Navy. She speaks both English and Portuguese and completed her higher education at St Augustine College in Teresina. Her partner is Loic Pietri, a fellow judoka.
