Williams began playing tennis at age four on neighbourhood courts in Compton, CA, USA. Her father, Richard, had a vision of raising tennis stars. Serena and her sister Venus showed great aptitude for the game. Richard made them train for two hours daily.

Patrick Mouratoglou from the USA is her personal coach. Serena plays right-handed. Her sporting philosophy is to avoid complacency by not looking back at past achievements.

Injuries Over the Years

Williams has faced several injuries throughout her career. In 2016, she dealt with left knee and shoulder injuries during the US Open. She ended her 2015 season early due to elbow and knee problems.
