Bekatorou aimed to compete at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. However, she faced a challenge when her partnership with Konstantinos Trigonis ended in early 2016. With limited time to find a new partner, she reached out to Michalis Pateniotis in March 2016.

Pateniotis had previously competed in the 49er class at the 2012 Games in London but had since been working for a media company. He quickly accepted Bekatorou's offer, and within two weeks, they competed at the 2016 World Cup event in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. The duo finished 16th and secured a spot for the Rio Olympics.
