Sofia Mattsson, a prominent Swedish wrestler, has made significant strides in her career since she began wrestling at age six. She trains with HBG Wrestling in Helsingborg under coaches Elin Nilsson and Sara Eriksson. Her sporting philosophy is rooted in hard work. "I learnt the core values that if you want to become a good wrestler, it's hard work and there are no shortcuts," she said.
Mattsson has been named the Swedish Wrestling Federation's Wrestler of the Year multiple times: 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014, and 2015. She also had the honour of being Sweden's flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 2015 European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan.
In 2015, she became the first Swedish athlete to win a gold medal at the European Games by triumphing in the 55kg category. Four years later, she won another gold in the 53kg category at the 2019 European Games in Minsk, Belarus, making her the first Swedish athlete to win two career gold medals at this event.
Sofia Mattsson resides in Helsingborg with her partner Robert Rosengren and their son My, born in 2017. Rosengren also has a wrestling background, having represented Sweden in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Her older sister Johanna has represented Sweden in freestyle wrestling and competed at the 2019 World Championships. Her younger sister Lisa has competed at junior level. Their father, Karl-Erik Taivalsaari, is a wrestling coach. Mattsson often trains with Johanna to prepare for major competitions.
Mattsson holds a degree in Sports Science from Malmo University in Sweden. She is fluent in both English and Swedish.
