Sofiane Oumiha Biography

Oumiha's dedication to boxing led him to win gold in the lightweight category at the 2017 World Championships in Hamburg, Germany. This achievement stands out as one of his most memorable moments in his sporting career. His success continued as he was named the 2018 Best European Male Elite Boxer by the European Boxing Confederation.

In 2017, he was also honoured as Sportsman of the Year by the audience of the Midi-Pyrenees regional office of French TV network France Televisions. These accolades highlight his exceptional talent and commitment to the sport.

Challenges and Injuries

Oumiha has faced several injuries throughout his career. In July 2018, he broke his left collarbone in a motorbike accident while on holiday in Bali, Indonesia. This injury prevented him from training for a month. He also injured a metacarpal bone in his right hand at the 2017 French Amateur Championships.

Earlier in his career, Oumiha missed the 2012 European Junior Championships due to a broken jaw sustained during a rugby match. Despite these setbacks, he has shown resilience and determination to continue excelling in boxing.

Sporting Philosophy

Not Yet a Professional

After winning silver in the lightweight category at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Oumiha decided to remain an amateur with the goal of claiming gold at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He expressed no regrets about this decision despite several propositions to turn professional.

"It was my decision, I haven't regretted it for a single second," Oumiha said. "Of course I could have turned professional. There were several propositions and I hesitated. But I was only 22 at the time, so I was still young."

Gym Owner

In September 2018, Oumiha opened Boxoum, a gym in Toulouse, France. This venture allows him to contribute to the local boxing community and nurture future talents. His involvement in both competing and coaching demonstrates his passion for the sport.

Cultural Heritage

Born in France to Moroccan parents, Oumiha holds a deep connection to his heritage. "I am very attached to my origins as I went [to Morocco] every summer," he said. "I was born in France, I represent France, but I can't forget my parents' history so I also represent this culture that is close to my heart."
