Sopita Tanasan Biography

Sopita began her weightlifting journey in 2006. Initially, she aspired to be a Muay Thai fighter like her father. However, she chose weightlifting to leave her village in Chumphon and attend a sports school. Watching Thai weightlifter Pawina Thongsuk win a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics inspired her to pursue this sport.

International Debut

She made her international debut in 2011, representing Thailand. Her dedication and hard work paid off when she was named the 2016 Female Lifter of the Year by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).

Challenges and Injuries

Sopita faced a back injury before the 2018 Asian Games but still competed in Indonesia. Her resilience is evident as she continued to perform despite the setback.

Superstitions and Philosophy

Before competitions, Sopita meditates to stay focused. Her sporting philosophy is simple yet powerful: "Work hard, find motivation, and don't give up no matter how hard things get."

Return to Competition

In November 2022, Sopita discussed her return to competition after a two-year ban for a doping violation. During her hiatus from January 2019 to January 2021, she opened a pet food restaurant in Pathum Thani Province. Despite doubts about continuing at her age, she chose not to let the doping incident define her career.

Doping Sanction

The IWF announced in January 2019 that Sopita had tested positive for a banned substance at the 2018 World Championships in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. She served a two-year ban from January 18, 2019, to January 17, 2021.

Further Education

Sopita has also pursued further education by studying for a master's degree in business administration at North Chiang Mai University.

Outside of weightlifting, Sopita enjoys photography and watching films and television series. Her idol remains Thai weightlifter Pawina Thongsuk.
