Sun Yang Biography

Sun Yang made his international debut in 2007, representing China. Over the years, he has earned the nickname "The Underwater Meteor" due to his swift performances in the pool. His dedication to the sport is evident from his early start and continuous efforts to excel.

Achievements and Awards

Sun Yang's career is decorated with numerous accolades. In 2012, he became the first male swimmer from China to win an Olympic gold medal by securing first place in the 400m freestyle at the London Games. He was named Best Male Swimmer at the World Championships in 2013 and 2015.

In 2017, Sun received several awards, including the Laureus Chinese Sportsman of the Year Award and Most Popular Male Athlete Award. The International Swimming Federation (FINA) also honoured him for his contribution to swimming popularity in China.

Sun Yang's career has not been without its difficulties. He faced a recurring back injury in 2018 and a high fever during the 1500m heats at the 2016 Rio Olympics, which affected his performance. In January 2016, he broke a bone in his right foot but returned to training by March.

In 2015, he withdrew from the 1500m freestyle final at the World Championships due to heart problems. Earlier, in February 2014, he underwent foot surgery for a toenail infection.

Sanctions and Controversies

Sun Yang's career has also been marred by controversies. In June 2021, he was suspended for four years and three months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) due to a confrontation with anti-doping officials in September 2018. This suspension followed an annulled eight-year suspension imposed earlier.

In 2014, Sun was suspended for three months after testing positive for trimetazidine, a banned substance. He claimed it was part of medication for a heart condition and was unaware it had been added to the banned list that year.

Personal Life and Education

Sun Yang resides in Hangzhou, China, and speaks Mandarin. He pursued higher education in Sport Studies at Zhejiang University. Additionally, he has studied for a master's degree in physical education at Soochow University and began his PhD in human kinesiology at Shanghai University of Sport in 2018.

Sun Yang looks up to Chinese swimmer Zhang Lin as his idol. Outside of swimming, he enjoys music as a hobby. His sporting philosophy is encapsulated in his motto: "You succeed when you believe that you can succeed."
