Svetlana Romashina Biography

Romashina made her international debut in 2005 at the World Championships held in Montreal, Canada. Competing for Russia, she quickly established herself as a formidable athlete. Over the years, she has amassed an impressive collection of awards and honours.

She was named the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Artistic Swimmer of the Year multiple times, including 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019, and 2021. Additionally, she received the Order of Alexander Nevsky for her achievements at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and the Order of Honour for her performance at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Romashina's Olympic success is unparalleled. She became the first artistic swimmer to win seven Olympic gold medals by claiming two golds at the 2020 Tokyo Games. Despite her success, Romashina faced significant challenges. In 2010, she underwent a hernia operation that kept her out of the pool until November that year. She resumed serious training in February 2011. A similar procedure in January 2014 sidelined her for three months.

After the 2016 Rio Olympics, Romashina took a break from competition to coach the Russian junior artistic swimming team and assist with the senior national team. She did not compete at the 2017 World Championships due to pregnancy but resumed training in September 2018.

Personal Life and Education

Romashina resides in Moscow with her husband Nikolay Zakharov and their daughter Alexandra, born in 2017. She is fluent in English and Russian and is currently a student. She holds a degree in Sport Management from Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics and Informatics.

In addition to her undergraduate degree, Romashina started a postgraduate degree in coaching at the Volga Region State Academy of Physical Education, Sport and Tourism in Kazan in 2017.

Future Plans

After announcing that she would not compete at the 2024 Paris Games, Romashina expressed interest in spending more time with her family and possibly having a second child. She also mentioned potential future roles in coaching or working with FINA or even the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
