Born in Volgograd, Russia, the athlete began her journey in athletics at the age of 10. Initially, her mother wanted her to be a gymnast, but she lacked the necessary skills. Her physical education teacher noticed her speed and suggested she try athletics. She soon developed a liking for jumping events.

In 2005, she missed the World Championships in Helsinki due to an Achilles tendon injury. Instead of risking further injury, she focused on winning the IAAF Golden League Jackpot that year. She underwent surgery on her Achilles tendon in autumn 2007 to recover in time for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
She holds the national sports title of Honoured Master of Sport. She is also the vice-president of the All-Russian Athletics Federation and a member of the IAAF Women's Committee. Additionally, she serves as a deputy in the regional parliament of Volgograd, working as vice-chairwoman of sports and business committees.
Her accolades include several orders from the President of Russia: Order of Friendship in 2001, Order of Honour in 2006, and Order For Merit to the Fatherland (second grade) in 2009.
In 2005, she became only the second solo winner of the prestigious IAAF Golden League Jackpot after Mozambique's Maria Mutola in 2003. She won all six meetings of the 2005 series and received a cheque for USD$1,000,000 for her efforts.
She resides in Volgograd with her husband Nikolay Matveev and their two daughters, Anastasia (born 2002) and Alexandra (born 2011). Her husband was also an athlete and now trains a group of sprinters in Volgograd.
After giving birth to her second daughter in April 2011, she returned to sports in early 2012. Her hobbies include travelling, extreme and ethnic music, and winning.
Her sporting philosophy is simple: "When you jump, you should not care about the crowds or the weather or your makeup - I just focus on jumping."
As of July 2024, she continues to be active in her roles within athletics administration and regional politics. Her future plans include furthering her contributions to sports and business committees while supporting young athletes through coaching and mentorship.
