The Australian sun had just set, casting a warm glow over Melbourne Park as Novak Djokovic, on a quest for an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam title, emerged victorious in the pre-quarter-finals of the Australian Open 2024.

Seated comfortably in the studio, Djokovic delved into the transformation he witnessed in tennis over his two-decade career. Somdev, a former Indian No. 1, probed Djokovic on the changes in the sport and the key elements for success at the top level in the contemporary era.

"The physicality is a big part of it. Players today are very fit," Djokovic began, emphasising the heightened fitness standards of the current generation. He highlighted a significant shift in professionalism, explaining how every top player now travels with an extensive support team that includes a physiologist, psychologist, nutritionist, analytics experts, and other coaches.

"The level of professionalism has grown a lot," Djokovic remarked, stressing the comprehensive approach to monitoring fitness levels, dietary plans, and regular medical check-ups to ensure players are prepared for the physical demands of each match.

"I don't think at the top level if there is any player who lacks flexibility, explosiveness, strength etc. Everyone travels with a big team comprised of a physiologist, psychologist, nutritionist, analytics and other coaches. That is the biggest difference I have noticed in these 20 years. The level of professionalism has grown a lot," the 36-year-old explained.

The conversation turned to the prevalence of injuries among players, attributed to the increased intensity of the game, a higher number of matches and tournaments, changes in formats, and participation in exhibition events during the off-season.

Offering advice to young players, Djokovic emphasised the importance of managing their schedules wisely. "It is important to be smart about your calendar," he advised, recounting his own fortune in having advisors who guided him in maintaining a balanced schedule, contributing to his longevity in the sport.

The discussion then shifted to Djokovic's personal routine and off-court activities that contribute to his on-court success. Describing his approach as "intense" and "rigorous," Djokovic highlighted the need for a structured commitment to training, recovery, and mental and emotional preparation.

"My style is more intense, rigorous, structured days of commitment, training, recovery and that of preparation of mental, physical, emotional, spiritual to get myself at the right level, perform at my best level and be the best in the world. It's important to strike the right balance between being active and then resting," stated the World No. 1.

Intriguingly, Djokovic revealed his preferences for the 'second part of the day time free from obligations. "I love to research on things that inspire me. I love history and everything about nature, human body and experience; how to live a profound and fulfilling life in every aspect," he shared.

The Serbian also expressed his interest in listening to podcasts and TED Talks, underlining his dedication to continuous learning and self-improvement.

As the interview neared its end, Djokovic looked ahead to the quarter-final clash against Taylor Fritz in the Australian Open 2024, scheduled for Wednesday (January 24). With a wealth of experience, a disciplined routine, and a thirst for knowledge, Djokovic aimed to continue his pursuit of tennis greatness. The stage is set for another thrilling chapter in the storied career of the Serbian legend.
