Thomas Fruehwirth Biography

Tom took up Para cycling at age 24 in Edelsbach bei Feldbach, Austria. His journey into Para sports began after a motocross injury resulted in his impairment. "I needed something for my energy as I came from motor sport. I love sport," he said.

Sports and Achievements

Tom has competed internationally in Para triathlon, Para cycling, and Para athletics. Before his accident, he was involved in enduro and motocross racing from childhood. His dedication to sports is evident through his rigorous training schedule of 25 hours a week.

He has faced injuries along the way, including dislocating his shoulder in a mono-skiing accident in 2010 and again in 2017. Despite these setbacks, Tom has achieved notable success. He won three silver medals across two Paralympic Games in 2016 and 2020.

Awards and Recognition

In recognition of his achievements, Tom was named Austrian Para Athlete of the Year for 2023. He also received the title of Male Para Cyclist of the Year for 2022 in Austria.

Training and Philosophy

Tom trains under the guidance of coach Christoph Peprinicek from Austria. His training regimen is intense, clocking in at 25 hours per week. He follows a unique pre-race ritual where he asks himself three questions: "What's the time? It is now. Where am I? I am here. Who am I? I am this moment."

His philosophy is simple yet profound: "Don't worry, be happy, and do your best." This mindset has undoubtedly contributed to his resilience and success in sports.
