Marc Pickel serves as Plößel's national coach. Plößel and his crewmate Erik Heil first teamed up in 2001 at the Tegel Sailing Club in Berlin. They have competed in various classes, including Teeny, 420, and 470, before moving to the 49er class in 2011.
