Tony Martin Olympics

Tony Martin Biography

Martin's family fled East Germany in 1989 before the fall of the Berlin Wall. They crossed into Hungary and then travelled to Hessen in West Germany. Martin has no memories of this event, only stories from his parents. He resides in Switzerland with his partner Katharina.

Achievements and Injuries

One of Martin's most memorable achievements was wearing the yellow jersey during the 2015 Tour de France. However, he suffered a broken collarbone on stage six and had to withdraw from the race. In 2013, he sustained a concussion and lung contusion during the first stage but managed to complete the race.

In April 2012, Martin was involved in a collision with a car while training alone near his home. He fractured his cheekbone, broke his jaw, and was knocked unconscious but did not require surgery.

Awards and Honours

Martin has received several accolades throughout his career. He was named Sportsman of the Year in Thuringia, Germany, in 2012. Additionally, he was voted German Male Cyclist of the Year in 2009 and 2011. His versatility extends to track cycling, where he won gold in team pursuit at the 2014 German Championships.

Outside of cycling, Martin enjoys spending time with family and friends. He is fluent in English and German and holds higher education qualifications in policing.
