Vasilij Žbogar Biography

Žbogar made history by becoming the first athlete representing Slovenia to win a medal in sailing at the Olympic Games. He claimed bronze in the Laser open class at the 2004 Athens Games. He continued his success with a silver medal in men's Laser at the 2008 Beijing Games and another silver in men's Finn at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Awards and Honours

In recognition of his contributions to sailing, Žbogar was named Best Sailor in Slovenia in 2015. He also had the honour of being the flag bearer for Slovenia at the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games. Additionally, he was named Cosmopolitan's European Sportsman of the Year in 2004.

Challenges and Injuries

Despite his successes, Žbogar faced challenges during his career. In 2015, he suffered a broken rib after falling off his bicycle during training, which kept him out of action for a month. His switch from the Laser class to the Finn class in 2009 also posed difficulties. The change led to health issues due to the extra weight he had to maintain.

After announcing his retirement from competitive sailing post-2016 Olympics, Žbogar transitioned into coaching. He worked with various federations and served as a coach for the Irish laser team. He also held administrative roles, including vice-president of the Slovenian Sailing Federation and president of JK Burja club.

Looking ahead, Žbogar aims to compete at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The introduction of a mixed two-person dinghy event presents an opportunity for him to extend his Olympic career. He believes this new discipline will be less physically demanding, allowing him to remain competitive.

Žbogar resides in Izola, Slovenia, with his wife Maja and their children Talin and Rija. Fluent in Croatian, English, Italian, Slovene, and Spanish, he holds a degree in Management from the University of Primorska in Koper.
