Komova's career has been marred by several injuries. In December 2013, she twisted her ankle while getting into a car. This injury recurred twice over the next three years, requiring multiple surgeries and sidelining her from international competition until 2015. During this period, she also suffered from back pain and underwent surgery to remove a cyst in her upper jaw.
In 2013, just days before the selection for the World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, she was diagnosed with meningitis. This serious condition kept her hospitalised for almost two months and left her with occasional headaches.
Despite these setbacks, Komova made a remarkable comeback at the 2015 European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan. At the 2015 World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, she shared the gold medal on uneven bars with three other gymnasts—China's Fan Yilin, US gymnast Madison Kocian, and compatriot Daria Spiridonova. All four gymnasts scored 15.366, marking the first time four gymnasts tied for a gold medal at the world championships.
Komova holds the national sports title of Master of Sport of International Class. She also had the honour of carrying the flame during the 2014 Olympic torch relay in Voronezh.
Komova comes from a family deeply rooted in gymnastics. Her mother Vera Kolesnikova is a former world champion and Goodwill Games all-around champion. She currently works as a gymnastics coach and judge. Her father Alexander Komov holds the title Master of Sport in artistic gymnastics, and her older brother Alexander has also trained as a gymnast.
Outside of gymnastics, Komova enjoys embroidery and music. She idolises Russian artistic gymnast Svetlana Khorkina.
As of July 2024, Komova continues to balance her life as an athlete and student. Despite considering retirement due to recurring injuries between 2013 and 2015, she remains committed to gymnastics. Her long-time coach Gennady Elfimov played a crucial role in preventing her retirement by arranging for her to train with the Russian national team in Moscow.
Komova's journey is a testament to resilience and dedication. Her story continues to inspire many young athletes around the world.
