Virginia Ruano Biography

Vivi turned professional in January 1992. She made headlines at Wimbledon in 2001 by defeating world number one Martina Hingis 6-4, 6-2 in the opening round. This was only the third time since 1927 that the top seed had lost in the first round.

Partnership with Paola Suarez

In 1995, Vivi met her long-time doubles partner, Paola Suarez of Argentina, at a clay court tournament in Houston, Texas. Despite a poor start, they went on to reach their ninth consecutive Grand Slam final at the 2004 French Open. This achievement had not been seen since Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver's streak from Wimbledon 1983 to the 1985 Australian Open.
