Ryan's journey in sailing started with an old wooden Sabot that his parents bought. He taught himself how to sail and began racing at age 13. His skills developed rapidly, and he progressed through various junior classes. A chance meeting with coach Victor Kovalenko in 2009 led him to focus on the 470 class.

Ryan is a member of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in Brisbane, QLD, Australia. He has been coached by Victor Kovalenko, a renowned figure in the sailing community. Kovalenko's guidance has been instrumental in Ryan's development and success in the sport.

One of Ryan's most memorable achievements is winning silver in the 470 class at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He also holds the distinction of being the youngest competitor in the 2006 Sydney to Hobart Yacht race at age 16 years and three days. His team finished 26th in that race.
