Wayde van Niekerk Biography

Van Niekerk followed his family's footsteps into athletics. Initially participating in high jump, he switched to sprinting after qualifying for the 200m at the 2010 Junior World Championships in Moncton, Canada. His stepfather was a long-distance runner, his father did high jump and sprints, and his mother also participated in sprints and high jump.

Training and Coaching

Since 2021, Van Niekerk has been training under coach Lance Brauman in the USA. His rigorous regime includes three daily sessions, six days a week. He combines gym and track training with stretching, yoga, and pilates to maintain peak physical condition.

Achievements and Injuries

Van Niekerk's career has been marked by both triumphs and setbacks. He won gold in the 400m at the 2016 Rio Olympics despite hamstring and back injuries. In 2016, he became the first athlete to run the 100m under 10 seconds, the 200m under 20 seconds, and the 400m under 44 seconds.

However, injuries have also plagued him. In October 2017, he tore his meniscus and ACL during a celebrity touch rugby match. This injury sidelined him for 16 months. In July 2019, he sustained a bone contusion in his right knee, keeping him out until February 2020.

Awards and Honours

Van Niekerk's accolades include the Gold Order of Ikhamanga in South Africa (2017) and being named Best Male Athlete of the 2016 Rio Olympics by the Association of National Olympic Committees. He was also South Africa's flag bearer at the Rio Olympics opening ceremony.

Apart from athletics, Van Niekerk enjoys supporting Liverpool FC and gaming. His hero is Dominican hurdler Felix Sanchez. He holds a degree in Marketing from the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein.

Looking ahead, Van Niekerk aims to run the 400m in under 43 seconds. His focus remains on this event as he continues to recover from past injuries and strives to break his world record.

Philosophy and Giving Back

Van Niekerk lives by the motto: "If you look at your life today and who you've become, do you inspire the young dreamer you were? Never forget the humble beginnings." He also made a significant donation to Groote Schuur Hospital's neonatal unit in Cape Town, where he was born prematurely.
