William Stedman Biography

Steady's interest in athletics was sparked during a holiday in London in 2012. He was inspired by the Paralympics and decided to give it a try. "I never thought of athletics before, but when I went to London in 2012 [on holiday], the Paralympics were on. I thought, 'Oh I could actually try doing that', and I got quite inspired by watching them," he said.

Challenges and Injuries

Throughout his career, Steady faced challenges, including stress reactions in 2015 and 2019. These injuries kept him out of action for several weeks each time. Despite these setbacks, he remained resilient and continued to pursue his passion for athletics.

Achievements and Awards

Steady's dedication has earned him numerous accolades. In 2023, he was named Sportsperson of the Year by ParaFed Canterbury. He also received the 2020 Para Athlete of the Year award at the Canterbury Athletics Awards. In 2017, he was recognised as Junior Athlete of the Year and shared the Middle Distance Athlete of the Year award with Angie Petty.

His early achievements include being named Junior Sportsperson of the Year for three consecutive years (2015-2017) by ParaFed Canterbury. Additionally, he was honoured as the 2015 Para Athlete of the Year by Sport Canterbury.

Personal Life and Interests

Apart from athletics, Steady enjoys playing the guitar and piano, music, reading, travelling, and skiing. He is married to Annika and speaks English fluently. He pursued engineering at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Club and Coaching

Steady trains with the Port Hills Athletic Club in Christchurch under the guidance of coach George Edwards. Edwards has been a significant influence on Steady's career, helping him achieve his goals with a simple philosophy: "Keep it simple and just do it."

Looking ahead, Steady aims to compete at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. His determination and past successes suggest that he is well-prepared for this challenge.
