Yang pursued higher education at Korea National Sport University in Seoul. He joined the Posco E&C Gymnastic Club in Pohang, South Korea. Under the guidance of his coach, Jang Suk Won, also from South Korea, Yang honed his skills and prepared for international competitions.

International Debut and Achievements

Yang made his international debut in 2001, representing South Korea. He gained recognition for his performance at the 2004 Olympic Games. Yang secured a bronze medal in the all-around final behind American Paul Hamm and teammate Dae Eun Kim.

However, a scoring error during the competition affected Yang's final standing. Judges incorrectly assessed the difficulty of Yang's parallel bars routine, reducing its start value from 10.0 to 9.9. This mistake deprived him of one-tenth of a point, which would have placed him ahead of Hamm for gold.

Historic Milestone

In 2006, Yang became the first gymnast to break the 16-point barrier under the new accumulative code of points at the World Championships in Aarhus. This achievement marked a significant milestone in his career and in gymnastics history.

Appeal and Outcome

Following the 2004 Olympic Games scoring error, Yang filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The appeal was dismissed because it was submitted after the competition ended. Despite this setback, Yang retained his all-around individual bronze medal.
