Smetov's initial attraction to judo was simple. "I started judo thanks to my brothers," he recalls. The sight of athletes in white kimonos performing somersaults and fighting captivated him. This early fascination laid the foundation for what would become a distinguished career in judo.

Smetov's dedication and hard work have earned him numerous accolades. He won a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, for which he received the Order of Barys from the president of Kazakhstan. Earlier, his silver medal win at the 2016 Rio Olympics earned him the Order of Parasat.

In addition to these honours, Smetov has been titled Honoured Master of Sport in Kazakhstan. His achievements also include becoming the first judoka from Kazakhstan to win three medals at the World Championships, with his latest bronze coming in 2022 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
