Zac Stubblety-Cook Biography

Stubblety-Cook started taking swimming seriously around the age of 14 or 15. He trains with the Chandler Swim Club in Brisbane under coach Vince Raleigh. His first coach, Glen Howsman, remains a significant influence on his career.

Inspiration and Achievements

He looks up to US swimmer Michael Phelps and Japanese swimmer Kosuke Kitajima. In 2021, he was honoured as Oceanian Male Swimmer of the Year by SwimSwam and Pacific Rim Male Swimmer of the Year. He also received Academic Athlete of the Year at Griffith University in 2019 and 2021.

Tokyo Olympics Experience

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Stubblety-Cook won gold in the men's 200m breaststroke and bronze in the mixed 4x100m relay. He valued his underdog status, which allowed him to focus on his performance without much media attention.

Education and Future Plans

Balancing academics with sports, he studies part-time due to his swimming commitments. He plans to transition out of competitive swimming by age 28 or 29 and aims to leverage his education for future opportunities.

Specialisation in Breaststroke

After high school, he decided to focus on breaststroke. Despite dabbling in other strokes, breaststroke has always been his primary focus since his first national school championships in Perth at age nine.

Personal Interests

Outside swimming, Stubblety-Cook enjoys cooking, coffee, baking, photography, and barbecues. He has a unique ritual of sticking his tongue out when climbing onto the blocks. His sporting philosophy is: "Things that were hardest to bear are sweetest to remember."

Challenges Overcome

In 2015, he underwent surgery to remove a tumour from his shoulder. Despite this setback, he continued to excel in his sport.
