Throughout his career, Lee has faced several injuries. In 2021, a blister on his right foot forced him to retire from the World Championships in Spain. He also withdrew from the Indonesia Masters and Hylo Open due to a back injury. In 2020, he sustained another back injury at the Invitational Championships in Kuala Lumpur.
In November 2019, Lee retired midway through his second-round singles match at the China Open due to illness. These setbacks have tested his resilience and determination.
Before each match, Lee listens to music to relax. This ritual helps him stay calm and focused during competitions.
Lee has received significant recognition for his contributions to badminton. He, along with Goh Liu Ying, was Malaysia's flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
In January 2022, Lee left the Malaysian national training programme to become an independent player. Initially banned by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) for two years due to a breach of contract, the ban was lifted soon after. Lee expressed relief over resolving the issue with BAM and emphasised focusing on results.
"I am happy that we are now resolving this issue with BAM. I think the most important thing is results," Lee said. "When results come, sponsors will come. That's the reality."
Lee admits that comparisons to Malaysian badminton legend Lee Chong Wei initially put him under pressure. Over time, he has learned to turn this pressure into motivation. "Since the beginning, everybody has said I am the next Lee Chong Wei," he said. "But slowly I have become more mature."
Looking ahead, Lee aims to win gold medals at the world championships and the Olympic Games. His focus remains on achieving these goals while navigating the challenges of being an independent player.
