"I fell in love with the sport and the people I met - maybe that's why I lost my head in fencing," he said. His right-handed technique has been honed under the guidance of coach Filippo Romagnoli.

His friend Daniele Garozzo's gold medal win in Brazil motivated him to refocus on his career. "If I can be a role model for all the kids that approach fencing or whatever other sport, teaching them that with sacrifice and will they can go far, I will be very honoured," he said.
