Former coach Wu Guocun has been the most influential person in his career. He looks up to US diver Greg Louganis, Russian diver Dmitri Sautin, and Chinese diver Tian Liang as his idols.

Throughout his career, he has faced several injuries. In March 2020, he suffered from bursitis in his ankle. Between 2018 and 2019, he dealt with chronic knee, spine, hand, and shoulder injuries. He also had an arm injury in 2018 and was diagnosed with a pulmonary haemorrhage at age 11.

His list of accolades is impressive. In 2016, he became the first male diver to win both individual and synchronised 10m platform events at a single Olympic Games edition. He received the FINA Male Diver of the Year award in 2016. In 2017, he was named an Elite Athlete of International Class by the General Administration of Sport of China.
