Chong Wei Lee Biography

Lee started training with the coach after school with his father's permission. He is right-handed and currently represents the Petaling Jaya Badminton Club in Malaysia. His national coach is Datuk Misbun Sidek. Lee's dedication to the sport has been evident since his early years.

Injuries and Challenges

Throughout his career, Lee has faced several injuries. In February 2017, he tore the medial collateral ligament in his left knee during training but returned to competition by March. A thigh injury kept him out of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. In May 2012, he tore a tendon in his ankle during a Thomas Cup match against Denmark.

Earlier that year, he also suffered a shoulder injury. Despite these setbacks, Lee's perseverance has been unwavering. His motto reflects this: "Talent is needed, but that alone will not bring you success. Dedication, perseverance and self-discipline are necessary as well."

Awards and Achievements

Lee has received numerous accolades throughout his career. He was Malaysia's flag bearer at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The Badminton World Federation named him Male Player of the Year in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2013. In 2008, he received the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri from Penang, allowing him to carry the title of Datuk.

Personal Life

Lee is married to Wong Mew Choo, who also represented Malaysia in badminton and competed at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. They have two sons, Kingston Lee and Terrance. The family resides in Kuala Lumpur.

Health and Controversies

In November 2018, Lee revealed he was in remission after being diagnosed with early-stage nose cancer. This diagnosis kept him out of the 2018 Asian Games and World Championships. He expressed his desire to return to court despite the tough times.

In 2014, Lee tested positive for dexamethasone at the World Championships in Copenhagen. The Badminton World Federation handed him an eight-month suspension backdated to August 30, 2014. Lee claimed the substance entered his system during treatment for a thigh injury.

Historical Milestones

Lee made history in 2008 by becoming the first Malaysian badminton player to reach the men's singles final at the Olympic Games. His silver medal in Beijing marked Malaysia's first Olympic podium finish since the 1996 Games in Atlanta.
