Constantina Tomescu Biography

Dita was raised on a farm in Turburea, a village in south-west Romania. Her family grew vegetables for the local market and kept a small herd of cows that she milked daily. This rural upbringing instilled a strong work ethic in her from a young age.

Sporting Career

Dita has been associated with CS Dinamo Bucuresti, a club based in Bucharest, Romania. Her coach was Valeriu Tomescu, her ex-husband, who is also from Romania. Valeriu has served as the head track and field coach for Romania.

Achievements and Challenges

In 2008, Dita became the oldest person to win the marathon at the Olympic Games. This victory earned her the "Premiul National Pentru Sport," Romania's most prestigious sports honour, in January 2009. However, her journey has not been without challenges.

She missed the 2007 World Championships in Osaka due to tendinitis in her right knee. Additionally, during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, she suffered heat stroke after 30km of the marathon. Despite considering dropping out, she walked for a mile before continuing and finished in 20th place.

Philosophy and Strategy

Dita is known for her aggressive running style, gaining time over opponents early in races. However, she insists that her strategy is to run her own race. "I don't care what the other girls are doing," she said. "I'm looking at my speed, every mile, every 5km."

Dita has a son named Rafael, born in 1995. Her personal experiences and professional achievements have made her a respected figure in long-distance running.
