Australia kicked off their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a comfortable 39-run win against Oman at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Thursday, June 6.
Australia fight back after early hiccups
The Group B fixture saw Australia score 164/5 after being asked to bat first. The ODI champions fought after early struggles. The likes of Travis Head (12), captain Mitchell Marsh (14) and Glenn Maxwell (0) failed to get going.
A 102-run partnership off 64 balls between David Warner and Marcus Stoinis resurrected the Australian innings.
Warner-Stoinis help Australia post winning total
Opener Warner scored 56 off 51, while Stoinis chipped in with unbeaten 67 off 36 (Two fours, six sixes). Mehran Khan picked two wickets for Oman.
Oman top-order collapse
In reply, Oman could never really get going. Four of their top five batters were dismissed for a single-digit score.
Oman number six Shoaib Khan was also dismissed for a four-ball duck by Adam Zampa.
Ayaan and Mehran show grit
It was the seventh-wicket stand for 32 runs (17 balls) between Ayaan Khan and Mehran Khan which helped Oman go past the 100-run mark.
Ayaan was dismissed by Zampa fir 36 off 30 in the 16th over, but Mehran stayed there until the 19th over to score 27 off 16. He was Stoinis' (3/24 in three overs) third scalp in the match.
Australia bowlers restrict Oman to 125/9
