Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday (May 30) scripted history after defeating defending champions Gujarat Titans by 5 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in a rain-curtailed IPL 2023 Final and lifted their fifth IPL trophy.
Led by their charismatic and inspirational captain MS Dhoni, CSK came back strongly from the disappointing performance of the previous season, to equal Mumbai Indians' record of being the five-time IPL champions. CSK defeated GT at Narendra Modi Stadium.
Earlier last week, CSK tasted victory against Gujarat Titans for the first time when they defeated the Hardik Pandya-led side in Qualifier 1 and booked a ticket to the IPL final for the record 10th time.
After finishing up on the losing side in the first three matches played between these two teams, CSK managed to break the losing streak against the tough opponents in the playoffs and repeated a similar performance in the final as well. In the IPL 2022 season, Chennai Super Kings finished at ninth spot and in the next edition, the Yellow Brigade put up a clinical performance to qualify for the playoffs. One of the biggest reasons for their forgettable journey last year was MS Dhoni's decision to step down as captain.
Under the leadership of newly-appointed captain Ravindra Jadeja in the 2022 edition, CSK failed to defend their title. However, the team returned to the winning track after Jadeja gave up captaincy and Dhoni was re-appointed leader of the pack. CSK made a fresh start this year, with the team almost identical to last season. They made a comeback strongly in the 2023 edition and now stand one step away from equalling Mumbai Indians as the most successful franchise in tournament history.
